Alerting serves to notify clients of, and/or trigger other services/functions on, certain predefined conditions or events. |
Description
This Generic Function belongs to Working Area Security + Support. Alerting serves to notify (groups of) services/systems/persons (designated its "clients") of certain predefined conditions or events. These events can range from harmless ("you have a meeting in 15 minutes") to critical ("all servers down in datacenter one"), and can be triggered by very simple conditions (e.g. the level of free space on a hard drive falls below 5%) to very complex sets of conditions (e.g. when monitoring network traffic to detect hacking attempts). The action that's undertaken when an alert is triggered depends on the implementation, and can range from a simple graphical notification to an elaborate set of actions, all aimed to bring information on the alert to the clients. It's also possible to have Alerting trigger other (infrastructure) functions or services.
