'Is of type' is a property of Building Block Variants or Pattern Variants: Building Block Variants are a kind of a certain Building Block Type, where Pattern Variants are a kind of a certain Pattern Type. A Building Block Type defines a single, logical infrastructure function. A Pattern Type defines a single, logical infrastructure solution (also called Product).

The definition of a Building Block Type on an architectural level consists of a functional description that contains the service offered. The definition of a Pattern Type on an architectural level consists of a description of Building Block Types that form this type of pattern.
