Description
This Building Block Type belongs to Working Area Network (NW). Distribution is a facility that offers data transport between two or more (logical and/or physical) data transport segments. This is accomplished by performing one or more of the following actions on data packets:
- Routing and forwarding;
- Address translation (manipulation of the source or destination address that's located in the packet headers);
- Media translation (changing the encapsulation type of data packets).
Optionally, forwarding decisions can be based not only on address information, but also on filtering criteria. However, for practical reasons this functionality is described in and assigned to the Building Block Type Traffic Filtering.
Examples of devices that perform Distribution functions are:
- Multilayer switches
- Routers
- SAN Directors.
