Function that handles storing/retrieving/updating/deleting unstructured data such as bits and bytes. |
Description
This Generic Function belongs to Working Area Storage. This function operates at the lowest data abstraction level, that of the "unstructured data" level, storing sets of elementary data elements, such as the bits and bytes on a hard disk. It offers the basic operations of storing, retrieving, modifying and deleting data. When more "intelligence" is needed with respect to data retention, then this function needs to be paired with a Retention Engine function.
As examples: realizations of this function can include:
- (a set of) hard disks;
- tape drives;
- Optical media such as DVDs, either rewritable or only writable.
